Bryan Salter: Animation Demo Reel (Spring 2024)
This is a collection of clips from across my career as an animator! In my six years of industry experience, I've become proficient in a wide variety of animation styles and methods. In addition to personal projects, I’ve worked on productions such as "Helluva Boss," "Hazbin Hotel," "Lu & the Bally Bunch," "Hit Monkey,” “America: The Motion Picture,” and “Cow Attack.”
0:03 The first three clips are from musical numbers in Season 2: Episode 7 of "Helluva Boss," and I'm especially proud of my work on them. Every shot in this reel is typically animated on top of background layouts, which are drawn by a separate department.
0:12 This shot from the Season 1 finale of "Hazbin Hotel" was animated by me, with clean-up and compositing by other departments at Spindlehorse Toons.
0:15 This is a quick action-oriented shot from a recent episode of "Helluva Boss." This is the kind of animation work that I tend to enjoy the most.
0:18 The next clip was a short personal project animated frame-by-frame in Clip Studio Paint. It was done purely for fun, and to practice staying on-model with Sonic the Hedgehog, one of my favorite characters.
0:22 What follows is a shot from "America: The Motion Picture." This project relied on advanced character rigs (all using master controllers), which were animated on top of a loose rough pass with a focus on solid posing and character silhouette. I carried this shot all the way from roughs to cleans for the main character, George Washington. Also included is a video of myself that I filmed for acting reference.
0:28 Here's a shot from "Lu & the Bally Bunch," a children's show in which I animated from start to finish with complex character rigs. It was especially fun to create the effect of Lu completely spinning around, which is notoriously difficult to do, with rigs.
0:35 A slow-paced shot from a special "Helluva Boss" music video, focusing on delicate movements.
0:40 This was a quick turnaround animation (and cleanup) of a character named "Mathilda," created as a gift for my friend Jacob Vatnhamar, who designed her.
0:41 Another quick shot from "Hazbin Hotel," which was often shown in promotional material for the series! As with the previous shot from the same show, I only handled rough animation, and cleanup/effects/compositing were done by other members of Spindlehorse.
0:42 From Marvel's "Hit Monkey," this shot is rather brief, but also quite technically demanding. It was completely animated and cleaned up by me, from start to finish.
0:43: This sequence comes from "America: The Motion Picture," and is inspired by giant robot transformations in Japanese anime. I was approached by my supervisor to plan and animate these four shots of "Big Ben" converting into villainous beast, all from the ground up. I handled both storyboarding and animation, as well as using a rig for the final cleanup. Backgrounds and compositing were handled by their respective departments at Floyd County Productions.
0:52: Two additional shots from "Helluva Boss."
0:55: These four clips are from "Cow Attack," and were part of an action/battle sequence. I'm thrilled to have been a part of the project, given that it is action-focused and anime-influenced.
1:01: The final shot is one of the most difficult, yet rewarding scenes I've ever done for "Helluva Boss," depicting a brawl between several characters all at once. I'm extremely proud and thankful to have been given the opportunity to bring this sequence to life!

Shadow's characterisation is, unfortunately, a SEGA mandate. Shadow is not allowed to be more than a Vegeta 2.0 now which SUCKS, and even Ian has openly stated that he is a little frustrated that they can't make Shadow more. He has to be a loner, he has to be emo, he's not allowed to have friends (that is to say, he's not allowed to express understanding OR appreciation of having friends; for him he has no friends, and unfortunately this portrayal of Shadow is a SEGA mandate, so the writers can't do much about it AT ALL. They are very constrained and restricted on how to portray and explore Shadow in IDW). Who knows, maybe now with Shadow Generations coming out this October, the writers will be able to explore him more and portray him better. I'm not counting my flickies though.
As someone who loved the scene you animated for the Spongebob Squarepants Movie Rehydrated, I think you should one day do an animated project of your own.

This is awesome. I actually have a portfolio review next week on Monday. So glad it was after spring break because it gave me more time😅
In my opinion, and as I’ve been gushing to my friend, the IDW comics aren’t anything ground breaking but they’re stable, there’s things to talk about and enjoy and I feel like there’s more to it then the recent mainline games and shows. There’s something to be said about just enjoying something. I keep telling my friend that it’s simply satisfying seeing these characters be treated competently. Oh the other hand I do adore where they’re taking this story. Is it a little rushed? Sure. Do I enjoy near every panel of it still? Heck yeah. I hadn’t entirely noticed Tails hadn’t got much development because I was just happy to see him implementing his established development in these past arcs but now I think it’s starting to drag a little and I hope they take advantage of this coming arc to start really developing him. And of course Starline and the deadly six/mostly just Zavok have gotten their due diligence in the issues after the release of this video.

My main motivation for playing video games, is the stories in them. So I don't find Colors to be all that fun.
Why Forces tho? It's a terrible Sonic game.

Those Powerhouse animations look soooo much better than the actual opening, what a shame.
Thanks for explaining how the camera movements affected the intro animation. I had a feeling that was part of the “cheaper” feeling it had to me, but you articulated in a detailed way. I’d like to see more like this. In the realm of Sonic I think CD’s intro or the Frontiers Knuckles prologue would be cool to go over. Wishing you the best out there and it was a good time watching your content again.

What i love about toradora is how every character has their own conclusion to the arcs in the show, the chemistry between taiga and ryuuji makes it feel as if they're siblings than couples, kitamura is your typical best friend, ami is both complex and but she's good with fixing relationships and minori is both positive and energetic but hates to feel pain, the Christmas arc was my favorite in the show

In my opinion, metal virus arc was very regular to me, it started good and it had good concepts, but then it was rushed and also , after all tha virus drama, apparently everyone acts as if nothing happaned.
I recall watching this back in 2015, and I distinctly remember that it didn't live up to the praise it receives. While it's pleasant enough for a single-shot 12-episode anime intended for casual viewing, I must caution you not to take his accolades too seriously if you're seeking something truly outstanding.
For me sonic o6 will have 6 to 7 moments in my list and the others can go from unleashed to adventure 2 from black knight

This video felt so much longer than 16 minutes long in the BEST way possible! Ive always found the sonic fan base to be very polarized about most sonic media (understandable to an extent given how vast the franchise is genre and tone -wise) and the idw comics are certainly no exception. it feels so so gratifying to hear someone express their love for the comics (of which i share) but also have a nuanced take including fair criticism!! I agree so hard with everything you said here and I'm honestly shocked you don’t have more subscribers! This video script is seriously tight- you articulate your points in a really engaging way!! It's been a little bit since you've posted, i hope you continue to make videos but if not, thank you for the ones you did make! I'm excited to peruse the rest of your catalog.

I personally hope we see Sage make her debut in the IDW comics. The comics take place after Forces. Though, the writers would need to do a bit of work to implement the events of Sonic Frontiers into the current IDW timeline. The events and timeline match up, the few questions are rather-when and how Sage would be implemented into the IDW storyline. Ian has done an incredible job regardless, of humanizing the mad doctor that is usually as callous and cruel as his creations. If she does appear in the comics, I’d be curious to how she would interact with friends and foes post Frontiers.
Maybe they’ll make an arc adapting the events of Frontiers in the future. If they did it with Team Racing, I don’t see why not. Also, I’d love to see Sage interact with Belle. Maybe it would show that part of Mr. Tinker still lives within Dr. Eggman, given how she made him view his creations in a whole new light.

Branflaixx/Nerdword was a really interesting Sonictuber to watch back in the day, because he was praising the 2000’s games and giving criticism to the 2010’s games well before it was cool.
What's honestly a shame is that it's not the writers who horribly messed up Shadow's character in the comics, it's SEGA themselves. According to (I think) Ian himself, that one infamous Shadow scene initially played out differently, but due to SEGA's ridiculously tight mandates on the character, they were forced to change the scene to what we have now. The mandates are also the biggest reason behind why we don't really see Shadow all that much throughout the comics. The writers love him, but they can't write him in the way that they (and we) want.
